Video Professor
John W. Schrerer created the Video Professor program back in 1987 and is still active as the CEO. The company was created in order to offer a myriad of computer training lessons via video. You've probably seen their late night infomercials.
The programs created are designed to help users learn about their computers and computer programs. They focus on basic computer functions as well as more advanced programs, like Photoshop or Excel.
The success of this product has led the company to be active in charity work across the globe. They give out annual college scholarships, support the US military, and regularly donate computers and lessons to charities. They have also participated in the creation of several computer literacy programs and has played a huge role in donating computer labs to various organizations.
Unfortunately, the Video Professor program has not entirely avoided criticism. They have been the victim of tons of complaints, mostly with regard to their billing system. It seem like most of their complaints stem from misunderstandings about their clearly printed policies, but these misunderstandings have led to Video Professor being referred to as a scam program. I don't think the program is a scam at all.
You might have noticed that their online and offline offers all promise to send a free lesson for a fee of $6.95 to cover shipping. Most people do not read the terms of service in their entirety and completely skip over the agreements that detail exactly how long you get to keep the free lesson. The lesson is not free to keep forever.
Perhaps the Video Professor people should not refer to the lesson as free as much as they should refer to it as a free trial. The three CD's you receive after filling out your application should be returned within 10 days (of shipping, not receipt). You will be charged a fee of $89.95 if you choose to keep the CD's.
Another major concern is the actual procedure for returns. You can not simply package and ship the disks. You must first call the customer service department, notify them of your return, and be assigned an authorization number. If you don't follow this procedure you will end up being charged for the CDs even if you sent them back.
The marketing plan used by them is commonly known as a continuity program. This means that you will be automatically shipped and charged for a new lesson each month until you cancel your account.
The people at Video Professor were careful to clearly state their billing and shipping methods in their terms and conditions. They also have a section of the website which is designed to tell you exactly how the system works. Those who didn't read those sections have only themselves to blame for the billing nightmares they claim to have experienced. Be sure you read about and understand any system you're researching before you choose to participate.
