You've probably heard of Multi Level Marketing businesses. Some people claim to have made real money while others have put themselves into debt in an attempt to participate. You, like so many others, are probably wondering whether or not MLM ventures are scams or legitimate businesses.

It's difficult to give you a clear cut answer to that question. Some people will spend hours in an attempt to get you to join their organization while others will spend hours trying to convince you why MLM companies should be avoided like the plague. Do a quick Google search and you're sure to get dozens of results for both sides of the equation.

Most MLM companies operate as a blend of direct marketing and franchise operations. There is always a "top-down" philosophy where a parent company works to sign up or produce a network of independent contractors. Each independent contractor makes money based upon the level of sales he and his recruits go on to make.

When you are participating in a Network Marketing program, it is important to remember that you will be paid commissions on the sales you make. Sometimes these sales will be to other distributors and sometimes you'll sell directly to clients. The level of compensation you receive will differ depending on the program you are participating in and the level of achievement you have attained through participation.

In reality, there are dozens of legitimate MLM programs around that pay reasonable salaries or commissions to their members. The trick is actually finding one amongst the sea of scams. The MLM suffers a bad reputation because the good companies are lumped into the same categories as some of the scams people have run into.

Ponzi schemes and pyramid scams contribute to the bad reputation that MLM companies try to avoid. Unfortunately, a good MLM company must work extra hard to convince the public that the system being offered is completely legitimate.

For example, back in 1976, Amway was sued by the FTC because they sold motivational materials. At the time, the sale of these products was considered unethical, but Amway went on to fight the accusations. They eventually won their battle, thus paving the path for the future success of Multi Level Marketing businesses.

Unfortunately, there are a handful of MLM companies that have scammed their members. They encourage them to make large product purchases even though they know that their members will have trouble reselling the products later on. These companies eventually fail and the members who made these purchases are left with a useless supply of stock.

Multi Level Marketing companies experience a bad reputation because critics claim that the parent companies make money off of membership fees instead of the sale of actual products. I once visited a meeting of an MLM group where the parent company was attempting to sell instructional videos for almost $100. This type of rip-off contributes to legitimate companies earning bad reputations.

Despite these initial problems, the Multi Level Marketing industry is doing very well. Many companies have changed their business models and some even avoid calling themselves MLM's because they want to avoid the negative connotations. They instead refer to themselves as network marketing companies.

Take a close look at any Multi Level Marketing company you are considering participating in. If it looks as thought you'll have to spend a lot of money on educational materials, you might want to think again.

Only 3% of those who join network marketing companies will actually succeed. Even if you have a ton of time to dedicate to the business, you'll still find yourself fighting an uphill battle.
