Charles Givens
You may be familiar with Charles Givens. He was, at one point, a very popular financial guru and could be seen lining bookstores shelves or on late night television. Givens passed away in the 1990's, at the age of 57. His death means that questions surrounding the legitimacy of his books and his business may never be answered.
Givens wrote three very successful books during his lifetime. They are Wealth Without Risk, Financial Self-Defense, and More Wealth Without Risk. His books provided financial advice. Critics claimed the advice was too risky, while supporters claimed they learned a lot from his apparently simplistic advice.
Charles had a habit of charging $1,000 to seminar attendees and wasn't at all conservative about his lifestyle. He once appeared at a speaking event in a while limousine with gold trim.
Sadly, consumers began to complain that the products Givens promoted did not earn the profits he promised and that the refund policy he advertised was not being honored. These complaints eventually led to a series of lawsuits and, eventually, criminal charges.
The most notable conviction was that of a California court. The jury on the case convicted Givens on a series of counts of consumer fraud. He was forced to pay over $14,000,000 in refunds to approximately 30,000 individuals.
The reason Givens was forced to provide refunds is simple. The prosecutor proved that Givens wasn't making any of his money by implementing the strategies he taught. All of his money was made by selling his own products and materials.
Charles Givens lost control of his company in 1997, after they filed for bankruptcy due to the legal proceedings. Steer clear if you should happen to stumble upon any of his products.
